What are Photopolymer stamps?

I get this question quite a bit, now that Stampin’ Up!© offers photopolymer stamp sets periodically.  Well, I am NOT a scientist, but I will tell you my understanding of what these stamps are and are not.  They are completely clear, plastic-like stamps that are fairly flexible, but stiff at the same time.  Their “stiffness” allows for crisp stamped images.  Their flexibility allows the images to be modified slightly when mounting on a clear block so the stamped image is shaped how you like it.  The main benefit of these stamps is that you can see directly through the image so image placement can be more precise than with traditional red rubber stamps.  They are also usually more economical and take less storage space.

But there are also some cons to these stamps.  The one thing that bothers me a little bit about them is they tend to get stained.  BUT, stained stamps still work just fine!  They just don’t look as nice as when they are new.  But I am willing to overlook this con due to the list of pros for these stamps, especially the cost!

If you are looking to purchase clear stamps, please do be careful and purchase true Photopolymer stamps such as the ones offered by Stampin’ Up!©.  Some companies sell clear stamps that are actually silicone or acrylic.  These are NOT high quality stamps and do not provide crisp stamped images!  They are tempting to buy as they are cheap, but you will be extremely frustrated when using them.  How do I know that?  Well, I’ve purchased a few and totally regretted it!  So learn from my mistakes and purchase only true Photopolymer stamps!
